Altia delivers IRAP assessed specialist information, intelligence, and risk solution as a Fully Managed (Cloud Native) PROTECTED workspace to an intelligence division of one of Australia’s Correctional Agencies.

The South Australia Government’s Department for Correctional Services has adopted Altia’s Compliance Cloud (PROTECTED) environment to deliver its specialist information, intelligence, and risk software on an isolated cloud native workspace.

Due to the distance between facilities and staff, the ever-changing fiscal environment, and specific intricate legislation and policies surrounding the use of technology within correctional facilities, the Department faced numerous complexities with its IT solutions. The need to meet comprehensive information and cybersecurity controls to handle PROTECTED information was overarching.

In response, Altia collaborated with Microsoft’s FastTrack teams of highly specialised experts in cloud architecture and cutting-edge security components, along with intelligence & analytics leaders within the South Australian Government. Eventually, developing the Altia Compliance Cloud – a highly secure dedicated workspace that offers government organisations the comfort of information & cybersecurity best practices and compliance with the Australian Government’s ISM and PSPF up to PROTECTED – all as a service. In partnership with Sekuro, Australian Signals Directorate accredited Information Security Registered Assessors Program (IRAP) assessors, Altia worked to obtain IRAP assessment against PROTECTED controls in September 2022.

The Altia Compliance Cloud now manages the Departments Altia’s Covert Operations and Intelligence Management Software (ACOS) and provides immediate compliance with the Australian Government IRAP framework. This compliance was achieved without a change to internal infrastructure – realising a significant reduction in operating & capital expenses and reduced exposure to cyber risk. This overcame challenges such as the ongoing management of an on-premises solution with multiple third-party vendors, large operating expenditures to support the on-premises environment, and, most importantly, meeting security requirements for hosting a PROTECTED environment from an operational and technical perspective.

The overnight implementation of the Altia Compliance Cloud and Software Solution within, Altia and Microsoft FastTrack provided the operational and administrative capability and the immediate compliance and protection afforded by complying with and enforcing Australia’s essential information and cybersecurity standards.

Both the South Australian Government Director of ICT and the Manager of the Intelligence & Analytics Unit have reported on the many benefits to their new deployment, including.

  • A significantly enhanced end-user experience.
  • The comfort of isolated persistent workspaces through dedicated the agency’s own persistent desktops (delivered within their own infrastructure) through the Altia Compliance Cloud ecosystem.
  • Secure/electronic messaging services.
  • A true and IRAP assessed PROTECTED level environment.
  • Single vendor support and reduced dependence on internal IT resources.
  • A total cost of ownership saving of over half their original on-premises solution.

The South Australian Government, through the Department’s Manager for Intelligence & Analytics said:

“Thank you again for the efforts, consideration, and initiative you’ve applied in the making (of) this environment. It’s enabling us to do our work and enabling us to use (our software) increasingly well. A comment made to me just before was a wish that Altia managed all our IT!”.

Rob Sinclair, Altia CEO, added:

“It’s fantastic to see our software enabling organisations to manage all aspects of the most sensitive investigations effectively, discreetly and securely. We’ve been helping the police and law enforcement agencies for almost 30 years – providing them with the technology they need to manage even the most sensitive covert and overt operations and we’re delighted we can continue to offer this expertise to other businesses and organisations.”

Brice Neilson, Altia CIO, added:

“Providing software is a small part of what we do. Recognising the use-cases of our software, stepping back, and truly understanding HOW it is used forms part of our greater service. Agencies globally face ever-changing information and cybersecurity threat landscapes, and the regulatory obligations accompanying them. Compliance with these regulations and frameworks is challenging, costly, and sometimes – impossible due to a legacy technology stack that has, before now, been required to rely upon for high-risk and mission-critical PROTECTED workloads. Altia’s ability to work with global experts from industry leaders in technology and security, such as Microsoft FastTrack and Sekuro, has removed that legacy burden. This is what Altia, Sekuro and Microsoft are here to do. Provide trustworthy end-to-end platforms and workspaces so our frontline and intelligence workers can do what they do best without distraction. I thank the Australian Government for providing the resources and policies, including the ISM, PSPF and the IRAP program to assist organisations and agencies with best practice information and cybersecurity standards. I am proud that Altia has achieved IRAP assessment against PROTECTED controls. I thank our Microsoft, Sekuro and other partners. And I thank our Public Safety, Justice and Intelligence community for keeping us safe. And we are honoured to play a small role in their efforts in making this world a better place. “
